What is CHAdeMO?

CHAdeMO is a DC fast-charging standard originating in Japan, now less common in Europe but still present on older vehicles and stations.

CHAdeMO is a DC fast-charging standard developed in Japan and once widely deployed worldwide. It uses a dedicated connector separate from the AC inlet and historically powered vehicles such as the Nissan Leaf. It also pioneered bidirectional (vehicle-to-grid) charging.

In Europe and Türkiye, CHAdeMO is in gradual decline as CCS2 became the regional default, but it has not disappeared: many stations still carry a CHAdeMO connector alongside CCS2 to serve the installed base of older DC-capable vehicles.

From a data perspective, CHAdeMO availability is exactly the kind of long-tail attribute that is easy to get wrong — it may be present on one connector of a multi-standard EVSE and absent on the next. Accurate per-connector standards data is what lets a navigation or fleet product avoid routing a CHAdeMO vehicle to a CCS-only site.
