What is EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment)?

An EVSE is a single unit of charging equipment that can charge one vehicle at a time — the middle level between a station and its physical connectors.

Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) is the formal term for the equipment that delivers energy to one electric vehicle at a time. In data terms, an EVSE sits between the physical site (the station) and the individual plugs (connectors): a station can host many EVSEs, and each EVSE can expose one or more connectors, though typically only one can be used at once.

Every EVSE carries a stable identifier — the EVSE ID — usually formatted per the OCPI/eMI3 convention as a country code, operator ID and local EVSE reference (for example TR*LUM*L080). This ID is what downstream systems use to track availability, sessions and pricing for that specific unit.

Confusion is common because marketing copy, hardware datasheets and APIs use "charger", "charge point" and "EVSE" interchangeably. For reliable data you need a level that is defined precisely — one vehicle, one session at a time — which is exactly what the EVSE abstraction provides.

In the Data for EV model

In the Data for EV canonical model the EVSE is the second level of the Station → EVSE → Connector → Tariff hierarchy. Each EVSE record carries its OCPI EVSE ID, current type (AC, DC or AC_DC), maximum power and capabilities such as RESERVABLE or PLUG_AND_CHARGE, all reconciled across source networks.
